Lightweight Concurrency
HUMMANOIDS’06
December 2006
Genoa, Italy
Language: English
Invited talk held at the IEEE conference
HUMANOIDS’06 in Genoa, Italy about Microsoft’s recently released preview of the Microsoft Robotics Studio. Including a scalable runtime architecture supporting 8-bit up to 32-bit technologies with multi-core processors, the system provides access to simple touch sensors up to complex laser range finders. A 3D visual simulation environment and open architecture allows easy integration and simulation of newly constructed hardware platforms. In this talk we discussed the design of the software platform and the requirements to be met to integrate humanoid robots in the future.

Programming Robots
British Computer Society SPA Group
November 2006
Cambridge, UK
Language: English
Invited talk given to the
British Computer Society SPA Groupin Cambridge, UK. Talking about robots one thinks about futuristic Star Wars like creatures such as C3-PO and R2-D2 or maybe about real, clumsy robots used, e.g. in car manufacturing. However, both kinds of robots need to be programmed in some way. Today’s situation is far away from the fantastic world of C3-PO and his friends. It is a mix-up of programming languages, operating systems and runtime environments since each manufacturer of hardware proposes its own hardware, operating systems and thus quite often highly specialised programming tools.
